Loving and Happiness Goes Hand in Hand  -  An Interview with Pat Evans, the former Mayor of Plano, by Haixia Wang, Translated by Jian Li, June ---2014

Plano is one of the most livable cities in the United States. It attracts many talented immigrants to settle here beause of its quality education, clean air and water, and many high tech job opportunites. The development of Plano is a result of hard work by many people and Plano city leaders, such as Pat Evans, the former Mayor of Plano. We were very fortunate to have an opportunity to talk with Ms. Evans, and we were impressed by her wisdom, her love of her family and the City of Plano.

1、Beautiful Vision of a Beautiful Mayor

Evans graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and history from the University of Texas at Austin. Previously, she had been employed as a teacher in the Richardson Independent School District. After receiving a Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, she worked in private practice as an attorney specializing in zoning and  family law. She was the mayor of Plano, Texas from 2002 to 2009.

Visiting with Pat Evans at her house, we could feel she is a lady with beauty, elegance and vision. Pat and Chuck Evans have three children and eight grandchildren. They enjoy family time together and often spent family vocations together. Family is very important to Pat and she is very proud of her children and grandchildren, some of them are teachers, and some are in college or attending local schools. They all work hard and love to help others.

Anyone who visited Pat’s house would feel the hostess’s love for art and beauty: the living room, kitchen, and the garden are all tastefully decorated. Pat told us that she was very thankful to her family and friends for giving her a life full of joy and meaning.

2. Drawing Inspiration of Love From Family and Social Responsibility

City of Plano’s reputation of most livable city grew during Pat Evans tenure as a mayor from 2002 to 2009. When asked “what was your motivation of serving the community?” Pat responded, “when we came to Plano in 1972, I stayed at home looking after my kids. At the same time, I have always been involved as a volunteer to serve the school and the community. When my youngest son learned how to drive, I started law school and started to practice family law shortly after receiving the law degree from Southern Methodist University.

No matter how busy Pat has been, she always found time to serve the community because of her love for Plano where the Evans raised their family. As a Mayor, Pat saw great potential for Plano’s future, and she worked hard for clean air, water, high quality education and business development.

With the leadership of Mayor Evans and the Plano City Council, Plano has made great strides towards the most livable city of its size in U.S.. In 2004, she was selected as Plano “Citizen of the Year” for her dedication to serving the community. It is the love for her family and the community that motivated her to serve the community with passion and dedication.

3. Plano MCOR - Promoting Multiculturalism in Plano

In recent years, City of Plano has attracted many immigrants from all over the world including many Asian Americans. There are new challenges and opportunities with the influx of new immigrants to the City. To embrace

new challenges and promote the cultural diversity, City of Plano pioneered in establishing Multicultural Outreach Roundtable (MCOR) under the leadership of Mayor Evans. Since its inception in 2003, MCOR played an active role in partnering with the City Council and cultural communities in Plano to encourage understanding and participation in the government process, and in promoting multicultural events, such as the Plano ASIAFEST, Plano International Festival, and World Peace Table Tennis Tournament. City of Plano is becoming an international city that attracts multinational businesses because of the visionary leaderships by mayors like Pat Evans.

We admire Pat Evans for her elegance, wisdom and dedication to her family and the community service. Her love for her family and passion for community service makes her a wonderful wife, mother, teacher, attorney, mayor, volunteer, grandmother.
